Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
Longdean School is a safe place for everyone. We celebrate diversity, we actively challenge discrimination, and we are committed to being inclusive.
Longdean is a diverse school made up of many races, cultures, religions, abilities, sexualities and socio-economic backgrounds. We want every individual in our school community to have the opportunity to succeed and to reach their full potential. We acknowledge and celebrate our differences and are committed to tackling prejudice through promoting tolerance and understanding.
Everyone in our community is expected to work together to eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation and any discriminatory behaviour should be reported and will be dealt with appropriately. Every individual will be treated with kindness and respect and given the opportunity to overcome any barriers they may face and we expect all of our stakeholders to share in this view.
We have achieved the Equaliteach Silver Level Equalities Award which ensures that equality and diversity are at the forefront of our decision-making and are always a priority for our school community.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) Forum
Forum
Our final Forum of the academic year will take place on Tuesday, 2nd July. Throughout the year, the Forum has provided a valuable platform for students to voice their opinions and engage in meaningful discussions on a range of important topics. These have included misogyny and sexism, racism and how it is addressed within our community, the PSHCE curriculum, mobile phone usage, and the planning and celebration of Longdean Culture Day.
The feedback and insights shared by students during these sessions have contributed to several positive changes across the school, reinforcing our commitment to listening to student voices and fostering an inclusive, respectful environment for all.
Misogyny
As a school, it is important that everyone feels equal and safe. Students are encouraged to have 3 safe adults they can talk to during school, and we are working with Bold Voices to provide training and workshops to students and staff. It is imperative that we empower our young people with tools that they can use to address inequalities within their everyday life and beyond.
Equaliteach Equalities Award
We are delighted to have achieved the Silver Equalities Award. Over the past 18 months we have worked with EqualiTeach to demonstrate how our school not only meets the important duties placed on us by the Equality Act 2010, but demonstrates good practice throughout the school when it comes to embedding equality and creating a safe and inclusive environment for all. We place great value on equality and diversity and celebrate the differences within our school community. It is fantastic to have this work recognised with this prestigious award.
