Year 9
Overview:
At KS3, all pupils follow the National Curriculum and
are involved in a range of units covering fiction,
non-fiction and media texts. Tasks vary from formal
assessments to more creative group work. Pupils are
encouraged to be independent learners and thinkers,
readers and writers and are expected to draft and proof
read all assignments.
In KS3 in English, we aim to develop the skills students
have learnt at primary school and to teach new ones. We
hope students will:
-
Enjoy the challenges we offer
-
Develop confidence in speaking and listening
-
Read, enjoy and respond to a range of texts
-
Develop and extend writing skills
During Key Stage Three, students will study a variety of
topics including those detailed below. In addition, we
will work together on increasing understanding of the
basic building blocks of writing ie spelling,
punctuation and grammar.
Topics Covered In Year 9 English:
-
An issue based novel
-
Non-fiction writing ‘Journeys’
-
Romeo & Juliet
-
Frankenstein
-
Media and Non Fiction on advertising
-
-
Poetry from Other Cultures
In the summer term of Year Nine, students begin their
GCSE course.
Assessment:
Work will be assessed in various ways. Exercise books
are treated as ‘workbooks’ and you may find that not
every piece is marked in detail by the teacher.
Sometimes the teacher will mark the work. Sometimes the
student will mark their own work or mark each others’
work. Sometimes this will be done by writing down
comments and sometimes it will be done by talking to
each other. For each piece of work, students are taught
to think carefully about the comments that have been
made and try to act on the advice given. By the end of
the year, students will have a portfolio with at least
five ‘special’ pieces for assessment. Students will be
given opportunities to reflect on their own work and set
targets for improvement.
